I-MESH FOR FACADES
A project of architectural integration of textile solar shielding systems for environmental sustainability.

A repeatable module composed of a stiff frame which supports the fabric through precise fastenings at the center and at the four sides.
The subject is the deformation: from a stiff and flat configuration the system gradually deforms reaching a tridimensional and smooth configuration.
The repetition of the module on the façade creates big media surfaces both at a static and dynamic level.
The idea is that of blocking as little as possible the view from inside to outside, thus the system is calibrated with minimum thicknesses, but at the same time it guaranties the perfect functionality and safety.
The module is composed of a C-shape perimeter frame of aluminum, stiffened by two steel wire ropes, diagonally joint at the corners of the frame. The ropes are blocked at the center by an ad hoc pivot.
The system of fabric movement is composed of four endless screws, fixed at the central pivot and at the four corners on autonomously operated engines, which have the function to make them turn. On the screws there are some moving ad hoc shuttles. This system allows the fabric, which remains fixed only at the central point, to be dragged by the shuttles, in the moment when the screws start to rotate, thus creating creases and ripples on the surface. Each engine operates autonomously, thus the fabric moves in a different way on the various parts of the surface, creating always new and changeable configurations.
The prototype has been made at a scale of 1:2 and the movement is carried out through screwdrivers with the aim to simulate the action of the engines.
THE REPETITION OF THE MODULE:
The project provides that the module shall be repeatable and approachable, so that it’s possible to create big surfaces of cover for glazed facades.
The possible configurations are infinite and change on the basis of the needs of shading and solar shielding, or on the basis of the images that can be chosen to be created on the whole surface of the façade.
